The Reunion Season

It seems like the end of July is always the season to have family reunions. I was sad when the Allen reunion was postponed, but still able to look forward to the Newton Reunion (my mother-in-law's maternal grandmother's family... whew!). Bevan and I have gone every year since we got married and we always look forward to these distant relatives that I've come to love so much. This year it was in Mona, which is actually where the family originally settled. We had a scavenger hunt in the cemetery and took a hayride past where these ancestors used to live. It was a tremendous success and it always makes me appreciate family, especially those like my own mother and mother-in-law who work so hard to keep the stories and memories alive!

Boom!

What an exciting holiday! I made sure to bring my camera this time so I could write about it. We had such a good time at Stadium of Fire... once the sun went down. You can really cook in those east bleachers. Lucky for us, it's also where we usually sit for football games. Devan and Teresa suffered with us, such troupers! It was totally worth it. The performers were entertaining (that David Archuletta's voice has really "matured") and the fireworks were spectacular! We're so glad we got to see them up close, although we payed for it by sitting in traffic afterwards. Oh well!

Monday morning we got woken up at 6:30 am by a great boom! I thought something in our house crashed. Then we heard it again and realized it was the cannon for the Midway flag raising ceremony. I love living so close to all the action, literally. The line was an hour long for the community pancake breakfast, so we drove into Heber for scones and omelets. Then we decided to burn off some of those calories by going on a bike ride. We were so excited to use the Chariot Monica has let us take care of. I don't think Anna has ever gone that fast! What a smooth ride! We rode past pastures and fields of alfalfa, looked at the swollen Deer Creek Reservoir, found a yak farm (who raises yaks?), and barely out rode a thunderstorm on our way home!

That afternoon we headed to Wyoming with the Wintertons for some good ol' redneck fun. They take their fireworks VERY seriously in Evanston! It's neighbor against neighbor, brother against brother, and the rest of us get to sit back and enjoy! We pooled together for our own fireworks show, and went up to the bluff to watch the mini Armageddon unfold. We set up right next to the city fireworks. It was ours, there's, and the rest of the town. I've never seen anything like it! Hundreds of thousands of dollars of fireworks up in smoke... the whole town was lit up! Rockets blasting, glaring, sparkling, and raining down ash! It was almost better than the stadium of fire! If anyone ever wants a truly spectacular fireworks show, just head to Evanston. We'll definitely be back next year!

Ah, Summer!

July sure reached us suddenly. It's been cold for so long, and honestly, I didn't mind it! Living in the mountains has lowered my internal thermostat and now I'm secretly wishing for it to get cold again. What's wrong with me?!

Maybe I'm just frustrated with our landscaping. It was going so good for that first bit, and then it's just stalled. We can't get the sprinklers installed until the rock work is finished. The rocks are too big. We can't get Javier, Caballo, and the trackhoe here until NEXT Saturday. In the meantime, we need to install a section of roof gutter, build a proper front porch, figure out if I want sprays or drip in the beds, install a new front door, move a jutted section of driveway, move the gravel, figure out what to do with all the leftover small rocks, stain the deck, decide on edging, trees, shrubs, pea gravel, mulch...

Can't I pay somebody to make all these decisions? Oh, wait...
That would be me.
I'll be so glad when it's all done, which right now, could be by Swiss Days.

In other news, Anna is getting bigger and cuter every day. We had Sharon and Lucy here for a visit and she enjoyed having another baby to observe. We all went and did the traditional Midway activities, jogged up Memorial Hill, shopped at "...the Barn" boutique, and had lunch at Tarahumara. Such fun!

Bevan did another half marathon last week, and even got a better time! Unfortunately there was much more competition and he didn't place. That's what happens when you run a popular race. I think he'll go back to the Bear Lake one next year.
