Johnson's Pumpkin Bash!

Our friend, Jamie Johnson, likes to grow pumpkins, enormous pumpkins!  It's a big deal.  He usually comes in the top 3 in the state.  His kids grow pumpkins too!  And what can you do with a huge pumpkin?  This year he sold it to Cornbelly's.  But before it leaves the neighborhood, his family throws a huge party for the "vine cutting".  We've never gone and were determined to go this year.  The soups were amazing, especially the Pumpkin Thai soup.  The kids loved running around in their amazing back yard and neighboring dirt pile, and took turns smashing the smaller, unimportant pumpkins.  It was fun to catch up with friends I haven't seen in a while.  We were the last ones to leave because my kids discovered the Johnson's basement full of fun.  It was hard to pull them away.

Moab Adventure!

I figured I’d better document this trip because it’s gonna be a LONG time before we get to do this again. Our friend, “Uncle Drew”, has made a career in recreation and owns our local bike/ ski shop. He invited our family on a weekend adventure in Moab! What’s the catch? No catch. We paid for gas and groceries as he let us tag along! His adventure-mobile-excursion fit us all!

I think the best part of desert camping is waking up that first morning. As usual, we pulled in the night before way after dark. To be surrounded by that drastic change of scenery was breath-taking. Red rock, red sand, brown river, green cottonwoods, it’s definitely moab desert! Bevan and Uncle Drew had to shuttle the razors down river, which took a bit, but by mid-morning we off to float the Daly of the Colorado River. The kids loved it. I tried rowing a couple times, but did a bad job of it. Good thing I never followed through on my dream of being a river guide. Uncle Drew did most of the rowing since the water was so low and mellow. He was actually a river guide there and knew the river very well! We hit all the best rapids, cruised past other boats, stopped for lunch, and made it to the end by 4. I loved the peace and tranquility of the river. The kids loved the sandy beaches.

Our next adventure was hiking up Negro Bill Canyon. Well, it isn’t called that anymore, I actually don’t know the new name. Anyway, we didn’t make it to Morning Glory Arch, but let the kids play in a section of the creek that was shady and pleasant. They all fell in except Dallin. He found a lizard to study instead.

Our last adventure was Razor riding in a section of the Sand Flats Rec Area called Hell’s Revenge. Wow, it sounds so lovely! It was actually really fun... once I got used to it. I compare the thrill to being on a roller coaster: contained in a vehicle with brief periods of thinking you might die. I felt bad for the kids being tossed around so much. They seemed to have fun, but kids rarely get thrills the same way adults do.

On our way out of Moab, we stopped at the city park to repack and organize all the stuff. We ran into our old neighbor, Jill and her cute daughter playing. My kids played for a while too, which made them sleep the entire way home! Our only mishap was a trailer tire blowout on highway 6, which the boys slept through also. If that was our only major disaster from a weekend of risky adventure, I’ll take it. We’ll miss you Moab!

Labor Day Weekend!

We are so sad that Swiss Days did NOT happen this year (stupid covid). But I don’t think many in town were complaining. It was nice to have a break from all the work. Bevan and I went on a date Friday night and kept ourselves busy Saturday with yard work. We picked apples and pears from Ryder’s fruit trees. Saturday night, we roasted s’mores in our fake fire pit. We invited any kids that were in town (which turned out to be ALL of them) and had a party! For not living in a “neighborhood” there sure seems to be a lot of kids around here! They played until it got dark and I made them all go home.

On Monday, Bevan had to work his last day on mountain bike crew! He’s a little sad to be ending such a fun, easy job. But he miraculously got his saw crew job back so we’re all grateful for that. Real hours, real money. I tried to be brave and took the kids swimming by myself. I think we’ve really hit a milestone though. With floaties, all our kids can play without me being next to them. Even Tommy can use the puddle-jumper to float around by himself! It’s a miracle. Now if we can only master swimming lessons, then we would really have it made!
